Perilune Workshop: How to Write Your Artist Bio
Saturday, June 15, 2024 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. EDT {online via Zoom} You know your own art and artistic journey so deeply, but how do you begin to describe what at times feels indescribable? What if you took a less traditional path to your artistic career and you don’t have the shiny credentials to show for it? This one-day professional development workshop is for artists in all mediums, but it is especially designed for those artists who are just getting started in their artistic careers, who lack confidence in their writing skills, or who worry they haven’t even achieved enough yet to fill a bio paragraph. If any (or all) of these sound like you, then we promise this workshop will be a game-changer. From your website portfolio to applications for grants & residencies, the ability to write a strong artist bio is an essential part of your professional toolkit. It can often feel like a daunting task to sum up who you are and what you do in this concise way; but in this workshop, we’ll learn how to simplify that process. We’ll talk about the important differences between an artist bio and an artist statement, the general structure your bio should follow, what to include, what to leave out, and how to say it all in 100 sparkling words or less. We’ll brainstorm and find the right words together. You’ll leave this workshop with the first draft of your new artist bio, which you can then tinker with and send back to the instructor for final feedback and polishing. But more than that, you’ll leave with a newfound confidence in your ability to stand on your own as an artist, no matter your background. Class size limited to five students. |

Life After the Book Deal: Publishing & Marketing Your Book
Saturday, February 1, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at the Kent County Public Library
{408 High Street, Chestertown, Maryland 21620}
What happens after you win that fancy book prize and sign your publishing contract? Poet and editor Lindsay Lusby will be talking about the wildly fulfilling (but thoroughly exhausting) process of producing and marketing a book. Having published her debut full-length poetry collection with a university press in 2019, Lindsay will describe her experiences over this past year—from drafting promotional copy, asking for blurbs, and reviewing galley proofs to planning reading events, DIY marketing with social media, and sending the finished book out to reviewers. She will give personal advice regarding each step of this process according to what worked (and what didn’t), as well as how to maintain perspective along the way. This will be an interactive discussion, so make sure to bring your burning questions about book publishing and marketing!
